Computer Technology and Medicine

Future Uses

The future of medicine rests highly in the advancement of technology. As technology advances, medicine and medical treatment is getting better. Trial and error used to be the method of discovering medicine, but now that scientists have higher levels of understanding, the development of medicine is now based on knowledge (Gottlieb, 2003). Because medicine is developed based on knowledge, computer technology can aid in the speedy innovation of new medicine (Gottlieb, 2003). Computer processing power coupled with microchips can change the way doctors treat patients (Gottlieb, 2003). If technology advances more, medicine will be able to target individual patients. As of now, medicine is supposed to work for all patients with similar symptoms, but since not all patients react in the same way, technological advancements will allow medicine to be individualized. Another future possibility though the technology of a computer is a DNA chip. This chip will be able to be inserted into the patient to diagnose the patient (Gottlieb, 2003). Instead of spending more money on expensive diagnosis equipment, this chip will get the job of the diagnosis done more efficiently, and within the near future, the price will drop making the chip the more favorable method of diagnosis. The chip will provide an accurate diagnosis as the chip allows very detailed examination of the disease or cancer cells (Gottlieb, 2003). The DNA chip will be able to provide information that many of the best diagnostic teams would not be able to figure out. This is just one of the many medical advancements now being developed to be utilized in the near future.
